June 2012

We met at the lovely home of Linda Eisinger to watch the movie Sarah's Key.  We had read the book earlier and was delighted to learn that a movie had been made.  Linda had seen the movie and recommended us to see it and so the idea was born to watch it together.

Before the movie began, we had delicious treats.  Linda provided sandwiches and cupcakes from Chez Monet (Jefferson City) and the rest of us brought dishes to share.  You can see our wonderful spread and get a peek at Linda's home.

Kristin Scott Thomas plays Julia, a journalist who is writing a piece for a French magazine on the Bel d'Hiv roundup of Jews in 1942.  She does a wonderful job playing an American who speaks fluent French.  The movie moves back and forth from 1942 to 2009 as the film tries to capture the horrific events of that time.  The plot is harrowing, with enough shocking scenes to make you feel some of the trauma the French Jews endured.

After the movie discussion, Pat reminded us of these words:

"First They Came for the Jews"
By Pastor Niemoller

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.
